ABSTRACT

Scientific progress requires parallel development of theory and tools to investigate and test those theories. This creates a need for interdisciplinary cooperation between scientists and engineers, however, professionals in both areas must often develop specialized skill sets and knowledge bases that do not always overlap. Although Jeremiah was formally trained as a neuroscientist, he found himself often bridging the gap between science and engineering in order to develop the means to execute the experiments he wanted to run (something that he thinks many people on both sides of the divide find themselves doing). In this talk, he is going to discuss how he leaned into this role to create a series of specialized positions and talk about the pros and cons of taking non-traditional career routes.

SPEAKER BIO

Emotions are intricately interwoven into every facet of our daily lives, from guiding simple value-based decisions to navigating complex and nuanced social interactions. As a neuroscientist, Jeremiah wants to understand how our brains generate and express emotional states and research why and how these processes go awry in disorders featuring emotional dysregulation. Unfortunately, studying these processes is a challenge for many reasons and not all these challenges come with straightforward solutions. His career thus far has been a bit unorthodox, mixing the development of tools and methodology with extensive experimentalism. He has used his background in neuroscience, engineering, and business to create a series of specialized positions in both academic and non-academic sectors to study both basic science questions and clinically relevant issues related to the neural basis of emotion. To that end, he currently works as a Staff Scientist in the Translational Neural Engineering Lab at the University of Minnesota, as a Research Consultant and Design Engineer at Gray Matter Research, and is exploring the neurotech startup world. His goal across all his positions is to make life easier for people, whether that is by developing tools to enable complex research projects or alleviate the symptoms of debilitating mental illnesses.
